Anthropic has published a new R&D Automation Index to measure how much AI is involved in developing future AI systems.
As of August 2026, Claude was “leading” 26% of Anthropic’s AI R&D work, while more than 90% of tasks involved AI at least at the collaboration level; none of the measured work was fully autonomous. Anthropic also said it was monitoring roughly 30,000 research agents and that about 6% of its AI R&D compute was allocated to safety work.
