Researchers at Google and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center have published in The Lancet the results of a real-world clinical study of AMIE, Google's diagnostic AI chatbot.
In the study, 98 patients chatted with AMIE before urgent care visits, and none of the conversations, which physicians supervised in real time, had to be stopped on safety grounds; AMIE's differential diagnoses matched the doctors' final diagnoses 90% of the time. Clinicians said the AI-generated summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases, while Google notes that larger clinical trials are still needed to assess such systems at scale.
