MIT engineers have developed a paper-thin swimming robot powered by living muscle cells.
Its two gel-based fins are coated with light-responsive muscle cells, allowing flashes of light to control the robot’s speed and direction through water. The team says similar biohybrid robots could eventually be useful for monitoring and exploring fragile aquatic environments.
