NASA's Perseverance rover has set a new record for the longest distance driven on another world, reaching 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles).
A 91-meter drive on October 11 carried it past Opportunity's 45.16-kilometer mark, with more than 90% of its journey handled by AutoNav, a system that maps the terrain on the go and plots its own route. Having landed on Mars in 2021, Perseverance is now searching for traces of ancient hydrothermal systems along the western rim of Jezero Crater, with its mission extended to around the end of 2028.
