UC San Diego researchers showed that RNA polymerase can accurately read and transcribe an expanded eight-letter genetic alphabet.
The system doubles DNA’s natural four-letter code by adding four synthetic bases, which the enzyme recognizes using structural cues similar to those of natural base pairs. The work could support future synthetic-biology systems with new genetic information and functions not found in nature.
